I’ve always been a fan of designer clothes and I follow the Indian fashion scene closely. Be it Manish Malhotra’s bridal lehengas or Sabyasachi Sarees , I am always updated with the latest fashion trends. I am a Ritu Kumar fanatic but one designer who’s caught my eye in the recent years is Masaba Gupta. With her quirky prints and bold colors, she’s painted the town red with her beautifully designed outfits. She’s the daughter of National award winning actress Neena Gupta who’s surely making waves in the industry as the hottest Aunty ( oops, aunty kisko bola be ? ).
Masaba at the age of 31 has carved a niche for herself in the fashion industry and has become the favorite of many A-list celebrities. This time though, it’s not her new collection that is breaking the internet, it’s her Netflix Original series, ‘Masaba Masaba’ that is a hit among netizens.
I came across the trailer of ‘Masaba Masaba’ a few days ago and have been excited ever since to see the real life Mom-daughter Jodi in reel life. In the show, both Masaba and Neenaji play fictionalized versions of themselves but the show does have many elements from their actual lives. The show starts with Masaba and her husband ending their two year old marriage and what follows after is a total chaos in her personal and professional life. On one hand Masaba is running away from her problems while on the other hand Neenaji is determined to make a comeback on the silver screen. With deadlines to meet and the release of a new collection, Masaba does everything possible to deliver on time but fails miserably. Neenaji makes a bold choice by seeking work on social media hence landing the role in a music video. The show also explores the bond that the mother-daughter duo share and it gives us a sneek peak into their not so perfect but strong relationship.
In an industry that is obsessed with fair skinned actresses , it was obvious when Neenaji discouraged a young Masaba to not tread on the acting path and choose an alternate career for herself. Having proved her brilliance in the fashion industry, Masaba shines in the series showing her acting talent while emoting every scene with perfection. Watching her on this show left me wondering why she was not an actor already. It is hard to believe that it was her first time on screen since she made the acting process look so effortless (she definitely got it from her mama!). Had she entered the industry earlier , bollywood would have gained a natural actor. Neenaji needs no validation and is just amazing , as always. The rest of the cast including Neil Bhoopalam and Rytasha have done a great job as well.
The show may not be the best show ever on Netflix , but it served as a lesson to those who, like me , are running away from their everyday problems. It taught me a very important lesson that no matter how tough everything around you gets, you put on your best smile and walk through it , accepting your flaws with grace. The show promises to make us smile while also making us understand that it’s okay if things don’t go as we plan them , after all , our lives are nothing but a big HOT MESS.
